Your Energetic Blueprint
When you first see a Human Design Body Graph, it can look overwhelming — geometric shapes, numbers, colored lines, and symbols. But once you understand the key components, reading a chart becomes intuitive.
Think of your Body Graph as a circuit board. Energy flows through specific pathways, gets processed in specific centers, and expresses in specific ways. Every aspect of the chart tells you something practical about how you (or your child) are designed to operate.
The Nine Centers
Centers are the geometric shapes in your Body Graph. Each one manages a specific aspect of your human experience. They can be:
- Defined (colored in): This energy operates consistently in you. You can rely on it. Others feel this energy FROM you
- Undefined (white): You don't have this energy consistently. You absorb and amplify it from others. This is where you're deeply conditioned by the people around you
Head Center (Triangle at the top)
Manages: Inspiration, questions, mental pressure to think
- Defined: Consistently inspired. May feel mental pressure to figure things out. Inspires others to think
- Undefined: Takes in others' inspiration and amplifies it. May feel confused about which questions are truly yours
Ajna Center (Triangle below the Head)
Manages: How you think, process information, form opinions
- Defined: Has a fixed way of processing information. Can be opinionated but reliable in their analysis
- Undefined: Can see all sides. Flexible thinker. May struggle to hold firm opinions under pressure
Throat Center (Square at the throat area)
Manages: Communication, manifestation, expression
- Defined: Consistent voice and way of expressing. Natural ability to manifest through words or action
- Undefined: Variable expression style. Voice may change depending on who's around. Pressured to speak or act when it may not be the right time
G/Self Center (Diamond in the center)
Manages: Identity, love, direction in life
- Defined: Strong sense of self. Knows their direction. Can feel identity is fixed
- Undefined: Identity is fluid. Can feel lost or directionless. Takes on the identity of people around them
Heart/Will Center (Small triangle, right side)
Manages: Willpower, self-worth, ego, material resources
- Defined (only ~30% of people): Reliable willpower. Naturally competitive. Can make and keep promises
- Undefined: Inconsistent willpower. Should NOT make promises under pressure. Easily proves their worth through overwork
Solar Plexus Center (Triangle, lower right)
Manages: Emotions, feelings, desires, moods
- Defined (~50% of people): Has their own emotional wave. Needs time for emotional clarity before making decisions. Their mood is internally generated
- Undefined: Absorbs and amplifies others' emotions. Can feel everything intensely but the emotions aren't theirs. Conflict-avoidant because others' emotions feel overwhelming
Sacral Center (Square, center-lower)
Manages: Life force energy, work capacity, sexuality, fertility
- Defined (Generators & MGs): Sustainable work energy. A "gut response" that says yes or no. Need to fully use their energy each day
- Undefined (Projectors, Manifestors, Reflectors): Does NOT have its own sustained energy. Absorbs and amplifies sacral energy from others. Must know when enough is enough
Spleen Center (Triangle, lower left)
Manages: Intuition, health, survival instincts, timing
- Defined: Reliable intuitive sense. Speaks once and quietly. Strong immune system. Knows what's safe and what isn't
- Undefined: Amplifies fears and health concerns. May hold onto things (people, habits, jobs) past their expiration because letting go feels unsafe
Root Center (Square at the bottom)
Manages: Adrenaline, stress, drive, momentum
- Defined: Consistent internal pressure to do. Can handle stress without being overwhelmed. Has a natural drive
- Undefined: Amplifies external pressure. May rush to complete things just to relieve the stress. Needs to distinguish between real urgency and amplified pressure
The 64 Gates
Gates are the numbers you see around and within the Body Graph. There are 64 Gates total, corresponding to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching.
Each Gate represents a specific energy or theme. When a Gate is activated in your chart, it means you carry that energy as part of your design.
Gates are located within Centers. When a Gate is activated in a defined Center, it operates consistently. When activated in an undefined Center, it's intermittent but still part of your experience.
Key Gates for family understanding:
- Gate 46: Love of the body. Physical health and embodiment
- Gate 10: Self-love. The behavior of the self
- Gate 25: Universal love. Innocence and the spirit of the self
- Gate 6: Friction and intimacy. Emotional boundaries
- Gate 59: Sexuality and fertility. Breaking down barriers
The 36 Channels
Channels are the lines connecting Centers. A Channel is formed when Gates on both ends are activated. When a Channel is complete, it creates a powerful, consistent energy flow between two Centers, defining both of them.
Channels represent your most reliable, powerful traits — the energies that are always "on" in you.
Example: The Channel of Discovery (29-46) connects the Sacral to the G Center. Someone with this Channel defined has a consistent drive to commit fully to experiences and discover their direction through doing.
Your Profile
Your Profile is expressed as two numbers (like 1/3 or 4/6) and describes your personality archetype — how you interact with the world and learn from life.
The first number (conscious): How you see yourself The second number (unconscious): How others see you
The six Profile lines:
- Investigator: Needs to research deeply before acting. Foundation-builder
- Hermit: Natural diplomat. Learns by being called out and sharing
- Martyr: Learns through trial and error. Life is an experiment
- Opportunist: Networks and influences through close relationships
- Heretic: Others project expectations onto them. The problem-solver
- Role Model: Lives in three phases: learning (0-30), experimenting (30-50), wisdom (50+)
Reading Your Child's Chart
When you pull up your child's chart, focus on these practical elements:
- Type: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector
- Strategy: How they're designed to interact with the world
- Authority: How they're designed to make decisions
- Defined Centers: Their consistent, reliable energies
- Undefined Centers: Where they absorb others (including YOUR energy)
- Profile: Their personality archetype and learning style
You don't need to memorize all 64 Gates or understand every Channel. Start with Type, Strategy, and Centers. This alone transforms parenting.
The Family Code app generates your family members' charts and translates the technical aspects into practical, daily parenting guidance.
Your chart isn't a limitation — it's a liberation. It shows you exactly how you're designed to operate, so you can stop trying to be someone you're not.
