Strategy & Authority: Your Personal Decision-Making Guide

Strategy and Authority are the two most practical concepts in Human Design. Master them and you'll make better decisions for yourself and your family — with less stress and more alignment.

The Two Things That Change Everything

If you learn nothing else about Human Design, learn these two concepts: Strategy and Authority. They are the most practical, immediately applicable aspects of the entire system.

Strategy tells you HOW to interact with the world — how opportunities, decisions, and invitations should come to you.

Authority tells you HOW to make decisions — which internal compass to trust when choosing.

Together, they form your personal GPS for navigating life.

Strategy by Type

Generator Strategy: Wait to Respond

Generators (37% of people) are designed to RESPOND to life, not initiate it. This means waiting for something to come to you — a question, an opportunity, a situation — and then checking your gut response.

What this looks like in practice:

  • Instead of deciding "I should apply for that job," wait until the job crosses your path and notice your gut response
  • When someone asks you a yes/no question, trust the immediate sacral sound (uh-huh or uh-uh)
  • Don't commit to things your gut doesn't respond to, even if your mind thinks you "should"

For Generator parents: Model this for your children. When your Generator child faces a decision, ask them yes/no questions and let them respond from their gut.

Manifesting Generator Strategy: Wait to Respond, Then Inform

MGs (33%) share the Generator's need to respond, but with an added step: once they've responded and decided, they need to INFORM the people affected by their decision.

What this looks like in practice:

  • Wait for something to respond to (like a Generator)
  • When your gut lights up, act — but tell people first
  • If you change direction mid-stream (which you will), inform again
  • Your path will be non-linear. Embrace the zigs and zags

For MG parents: Teach your MG children the "I'm going to..." practice. Before they switch activities or change plans, they say "I'm going to do X now" — this creates harmony without sacrificing their speed.

Projector Strategy: Wait for the Invitation

Projectors (20%) are designed to wait for recognition and invitation before sharing their gifts. This doesn't mean waiting passively — it means positioning yourself to be seen and then allowing the invitation to come.

What this looks like in practice:

  • Don't offer advice or guidance unless asked
  • When someone genuinely recognizes your expertise and invites your input, THAT's your moment
  • Major life decisions (career, relationships, living situations) should come through formal invitations
  • Study and develop your expertise while you wait — preparation IS your active phase

For Projector parents: This can feel challenging in a world that rewards hustle. Help your Projector children understand that their gift is seeing and guiding — and that the right opportunities will recognize them.

Manifestor Strategy: Inform Before Acting

Manifestors (8%) are the only Type designed to initiate. Their strategy isn't about asking permission — it's about informing the people who will be affected by their actions.

What this looks like in practice:

  • When you get the urge to act, let the relevant people know BEFORE you do it
  • You don't need agreement — you need to maintain the flow of information
  • Informing reduces the resistance others feel toward your initiating energy
  • The urge to act comes in waves. Not every urge needs to be followed

For Manifestor parents: Teach your Manifestor children that informing isn't the same as asking permission. "I'm going to ride my bike to the park" is informing. This preserves their autonomy while keeping everyone in the loop.

Reflector Strategy: Wait a Lunar Cycle

Reflectors (1%) operate on the moon's 28-day cycle. For major decisions, they need to wait a full cycle to experience the decision from all possible perspectives.

What this looks like in practice:

  • Don't make major decisions in a single day
  • Over 28 days, notice how you feel about the decision at different times
  • Discuss the decision with trusted people throughout the cycle
  • After a full cycle, the answer typically becomes clear

For Reflector parents: This requires extraordinary patience from parents, but honoring a Reflector child's need for time produces much better decisions than forcing quick ones.

Authority: Your Inner Decision-Making Compass

While Strategy tells you how to meet life, Authority tells you how to decide. There are several types of Authority, determined by your chart:

Emotional Authority (~50% of people)

If your Solar Plexus is defined, this is your Authority. You make decisions through emotional clarity, which means:

  • NEVER make important decisions in the heat of emotion (high or low)
  • Wait for your emotional wave to pass — clarity comes in the calm between waves
  • "Sleep on it" is literally your best strategy
  • The right decision will feel clear and calm, not excited or desperate

For parents with Emotional Authority: Model patience in decision-making for your children. "I need to feel this through before I decide" teaches them that emotional processing isn't weakness — it's wisdom.

Sacral Authority (Generators & MGs without defined Solar Plexus)

Your gut response IS your authority. That immediate "uh-huh" or "uh-uh" is the most reliable compass you have.

  • Trust the initial gut response, not the mind's second-guessing
  • The body responds before the brain can rationalize
  • Practice with small decisions to build trust in your sacral
  • If the gut is quiet, it's not the right time to decide

For parents with Sacral Authority: Ask yourself yes/no questions about parenting decisions. "Does this school feel right for my child?" Listen to your gut BEFORE your mind lists pros and cons.

Splenic Authority

The Spleen speaks once, quietly, in the moment. It's the most intuitive Authority — a knowing that comes and goes instantly.

  • Trust the first instinct, even if you can't explain it
  • Don't wait or deliberate — the splenic hit is now or never
  • It often communicates through the body: a chill, a stomach tightening, a sense of unease or rightness
  • Logic may not support your splenic knowing — trust it anyway

Self-Projected Authority

Your truth comes through your own voice. You need to hear yourself talk to discover what's correct.

  • Talk through decisions with trusted people (not for their opinion, but to hear yourself)
  • Notice which words light you up and which feel flat
  • Your throat and identity are connected — speaking IS deciding

Ego/Heart Authority

If you have Ego Authority, your willpower and what your heart wants is your guide.

  • "Do I want this?" is the only question that matters
  • Your will is reliable — if your heart is in it, you can sustain it
  • Don't let others' needs override your own desire

Lunar Authority (Reflectors only)

The moon moving through your chart over 28 days activates different gates, giving you different perspectives on the same decision.

  • Major decisions require a full 28-day cycle
  • Keep a journal of how you feel about the decision each day
  • After a full cycle, the answer will be clear

Strategy + Authority in Family Life

The magic happens when every family member knows their Strategy and Authority. Decisions become cleaner, conflicts decrease, and each person feels empowered to navigate life in their own way.

Practical family application:

  • Let Generator family members respond to options rather than generating ideas from scratch
  • Recognize Projector family members before asking for their input
  • Give Manifestor family members space to inform rather than demanding permission
  • Allow Emotional Authority holders time before finalizing family decisions
  • Trust Sacral responses even when they don't make logical sense

The Family Code app identifies each family member's Strategy and Authority and provides daily reminders for living in alignment.
